Welcome to the second edition of Conexión Sónica, a virtual event where you will discover music and cultural infrastructure from Latin America.

From November 28 til December 4, 2022, 7 videos will be premiered, presenting 4 concerts of Latin American artists from Bolivia, Brazil, Chile and Paraguay, plus 3 retrospective of a cultural center in Colombia, La Pascasia, plus two festivals from Chile and Mexico. The event is a digital tool where members of the network Conexiones Culturales de Latinoamérica aim to strengthen alliances through cultural exchanges that allow them to promote the diverse cultures of their countries and broaden audiences in the digital space.

CONEXIÓN SÓNICA is presented by the support of Ibermúsicas, and is organized by Conexiones Culturales de Latinoamérica (CCLA), a collaborative network that connects music industry professions in Latin America.

Aiace

Country: Brazil

Aiace is a vocalist and composer from Bahía, Brazil. Her music is characterized by its force and beauty, while simultaneously emphasizing the nuances of being a woman and speaking about the related social issues, feelings of worth and affection. The audience will be exposed to Aiace’s repertoire including songs like “Amarelocura”, “Quando A Gente Se Vê” and “Nobre Mulher” in addition to original songs in Spanish, and interpretations of traditional popular songs like “Duerme Negrito” by Atahualpa Yupanqui.

Altiplano

Country: Bolivia

The Bolivian band Altiplano was formed in La Paz, and is directed by composer Edgar Bustillo O. The group mixes Bolivian folkloric music with the rhythms of rock, blues and jazz using native instruments, creole strings and native percussion which blend together to create the groups unique and creative sound. For more than 40 years, they have been one of Bolivia's most interesting alternative projects. Their concert was recorded at the Teatro Nuna Espacio Arte in La Paz. Teatro Nuna is a member organization of the network Conexiones Culturales de Latinoamérica, and was founded in 2013. The theater is located in the southern district of La Paz and promotes the development of works of art and concerts. They offer diverse programming and workshops across disciplines in their facilities which include dedicated spaces for theater, dance and music.

Purahéi Soul

Country: Paraguay

Purahéi Soul is a musical group that was founded in 2013 by Paraguayan artists Jennifer Hicks and Miguel Narváez. The group is known for performing folkloric music, and modern interpretations of jazz and blues standards, paying tribute to their diverse inspirations. Purahéi means singing in the native language, Guaraní, and Soul’s music focus on sounds of the Afro-diaspora, and the word Soul. They will be presented by Síncopa Productions, a Paraguayan production company that focuses on the production and management of shows in the jazz genre.

La Boa

In the midst of a landscape that mixes jungles, mountains, beaches, cities, intricate trails and sea lanes, La BOA returns to the Colombian music scene with their fourth studio-release, again focusing on the vast cultural and sonic diversity of the Caribbean, evoking feelings of festivals of the 70s and 80s. La Boa was invited to participate in this year’s edition of Conexión Sónica by the Foundation Otro Sur, an independent organization whose goal is to promote intercultural exchange between Africa and Latin America with the objective of starting a conversation about the realities of both regions.

Festival Mundovivo

Country: Chile

Mundovivo is an independent booking agency and producer of cultural events founded in 1995 in Santiago, Chile. They are the creators and producers of the renowned festival “Festival de Músicas del Mundo”, which recently celebrated its 20th anniversary and has presented national and international artists across the country of Chile. Mundovivo’s video presents Samadi, and Subhira, the first of which consists of Pascuala Ilabaca on voice, Rhodes and accordion, Jaime Frez on percussion, and Bhavani Kali performing Indian dances. The second video presents Subhira, one of the precursor bands of “World Music” in Chile. With more than 25 years of performances and 19 recordings, their music blends the music of the native people of South America with avant-garde, electronica and progressive sounds by incorporating elements of jazz, academic music and folklore.

Centro Cultural La Pascasia

Country: Colombia

La Pascasia is a historic home located in the center of Medellín, Colombia that serves as a meeting place for artists, audiences and locals. It is also a theater, art gallery, library and restaurant, as well as the base for the corporation “Común y Corriente”. For the festival, La Pascasia will present a concert filmed on July 8, 2022 at the Teatro Universidad de Medellín with music that reflects the diversity of La Pascasia, and highlights various ways of thought and creation of the Antioquian state featuring artists Mr. Bleat, Garúas, Son de la Nubia and León Giraldo.

Festival de Música de Morelia

Country: Mexico

The Festival de Música de Morelia Miguel Bernal Jiménez came about in 1989 with the goal of promoting and expanding the educational initiatives of the illustrious Michoacán composer Miguel Bernal Jiménez, and has managed to present some of the most important acts in concert music for the past 33 years. The Festival has become an important space to showcase great Mexican musicians and has established itself as an important link between students and the world-class musicians that perform and give masterclasses at the festival each year.
